Embracing the New ESC Guidelines with Livv Health
The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has recently released updated guidelines for the management of elevated blood pressure and hypertension. These revisions underscore the importance of recognizing that cardiovascular risk increases progressively with rising blood pressure, starting from levels as low as 120 mmHg. The updated guidelines place a significant emphasis on early detection, prevention through lifestyle modifications, and more aggressive treatment goals to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.
Key Revisions in the Updated Guidelines:
- Lower Treatment Goals: Target systolic blood pressure of 120–129 mmHg for patients on medication who can tolerate it, to further reduce cardiovascular complications. Cardiovascular risk increases from blood pressure levels above 120 mmHg, not just from 140 mmHg.
- Enhanced Screening: Recommend blood pressure screening every three years for individuals under 40 without risk factors; more frequent screenings for those over 40 or with risk factors.
- Home Monitoring Encouraged: Advocate the use of validated home blood pressure devices for regular self-monitoring, empowering individuals in their health management.
- Lifestyle Changes for Prevention: Emphasize preventing hypertension through lifestyle modifications such as avoiding alcohol, reducing salt intake, not smoking, pursuing weight loss if overweight, following a Mediterranean or DASH diet, engaging in over 150 minutes of physical activity per week; note that coffee consumption does not increase the risk of hypertension.
- Increase Potassium Intake: Advise boosting potassium intake by consuming more fruits and vegetables, which is especially beneficial for female patients.
- Limit Sugary Beverages: Recommend limiting sugar-sweetened drinks to less than 10% of daily energy intake and suggest that children avoid them entirely.

Abelia x Livv Health
We had the great privilege to meet with Abelia in our offices last week. Abelia is a trade and employers association associated with Norways largest employers’ organisation; the NHO (Confederation of Norwegian Business and Industry).
During the meeting, Livv Health presented our team, our product, and our vision for the healthcare sector. We showcased how our app empowers patients with quick, easy, and complete access to all their health data across different sources. By improving health literacy through better access to personal health information, we aim to shift the focus from reactive treatment to proactive prevention.
We also introduced our AI-powered lifestyle portal, which provides doctors with the tools to effectively engage in preventive care by working with multiple data points. The portal integrates various sources of patient data—such as medical records, wearable device metrics, and lab results—into an accessible platform. This holistic view enables healthcare professionals to identify potential health risks earlier and develop more personalized care plans, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
We discussed the significant barriers posed by overworked healthcare professionals and the current lack of emphasis on preventive care. Our solutions are designed to alleviate some of the pressures on healthcare providers by enabling patients to take a more active role in managing their health and by equipping doctors with better tools for preventive medicine.
We believe that collaboration is key to driving this change, and we see Abelia as a valuable ally in this endeavor.
